Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?  Hypnotherapy is an altered state of consciousness that can be used to access resources held in the unconscious mind and effect positive change.

Milton H Erickson a renowned American psychiatrist specialising in medical hypnosis was known for his unconventional approach to psychotherapy, his use of metaphor and story telling, his approach of affecting change in relatively few sessions and his ability to utilise anything about the client to facilitate change.

His interventions have influenced well known relationship therapist Virginia Satir and Gregory Bateson and his Milton Model is used widely in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming).

Unlike conventional clinical and medical hypnosis Ericksonian hypnosis is permissive rather than authoritarian providing the client with choices rather then issuing instructions. The use of artfully vague language, indirect terms and open loops leaves room for the client to fill in the blanks attaching their own meaning skilfully hooking the unconscious mind enabling lasting ecological change.

People experience dis-ease 'because they are out of rapport with their own unconscious.' Milton Erickson 1976
